One of our amazing centers (Queer Community Alliance Center) is hosting their fourth annual Five College Queer Gender & Sexuality Conference this weekend!

The Queer Conference, which takes place at Hampshire College in the heart of the Five College Consortium in Western Massachusetts aims to offer an accountable and supportive environment in which to further explore a wide range of topics, and their intersections, such as race, genders, sexualities, ability, class, kink, survival strategies, and many more, in a specifically queer context. We strive to provide a safer space for engaging, learning, and sharing with workshops, panels, and lectures by both student leaders and off-campus educators.

This open and inclusive conference is FREE and organized by students from the Five Colleges.

Hampshire College anti-racist Halloween costume checklist is used at UCLA.

UCLA student Ben Slavich remarks, “Yes, I did find the checklist. It was posted next to the elevator of every floor, and the main entrance to the residence hall as well. I don’t know if it was received at all. I go to UCLA so our campus is quite large, and I didn’t see any persons actively trying to advocate the ideology presented in the poster. I was surprised to see the poster at all; I didn’t think the school was aware of such issues. I would love to have seen this poster enforced a little bit more because there were many racially incorrect costumes. But it would be hard to force that upon a campus so large.

However, on the other hand UCLA is instating a tabacco free policy on the whole campus. Ironically, the campus is littered with racially incorrect costumes on Halloween but not even the littlest bit of tabacco.”

Come by the Cultural Center and have a snack and meet with Community Advocacy student worker, Eshe Shukura (eks09@hampshire.edu) and learn about the CAU! Drop-in anytime for a 10-15min meeting!

The Community Advocacy Union supports identity/social wellness-based communities at Hampshire College. The Union serves as a hub for students spread information on group events, discuss and work on campus issues, and facilitate inter-group dialogue. The Union critically address issues and actively attempt to make decisions that fight against oppression.

The CAU had a great semester! We’re ending on a strong note!
We accomplished so much and can’t wait for spring so that we can meet even more of you guys!

For a semester’s recap:

::We took on the task of following up with the work that has been started on Identity Based Housing and focused our attention on trying to create accesible documentation with the Housing Office.

::We created an anti-racist Hampshire Halloween checklist, and saw more people than ever discussing and attempting a safe and anti-culturally appropriative Halloween!

::We shared our hopes and gave input about the future of the Multicultural dean position.

::We participated in the planning process of the new Student Government Alliance.

All in all, pretty epic!
